Murphy & Smith, Ltd. was formed in 1986 by Arthur J. Murphy and Frank J. Smith, both having practiced with a thirty-attorney litigation firm in Chicago.

ARTHUR J. MURPHY, born Englewood, New Jersey, November 22, 1950; Admitted to bar, Illinois, 1978; United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, 1978; Federal Trial Bar, 1982. Preparatory Education, The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. (B.A., 1973); Legal Education, The John Marshall Law School, Chicago, Illinois (J.D., 1978). Following law school became associated with Project Verdict, an organization providing assistance to and advocating on behalf of Armed Forces veterans. In that capacity, appeared before military tribunals of all branches of the Armed Services.
In 1979, Mr. Murphy became associated with the law firm of Orner & Wasserman, Ltd., Chicago, Illinois, where he specialized in insurance defense litigation from March 1979 to April 1987. He was made a partner in that firm in January 1984. Mr. Murphy founded Murphy & Smith, Ltd. in 1988, still concentrating in insurance defense. He has served as an Arbitrator with the Cook County Mandatory Arbitration Program from its inception (1990) to present. and served as law clerk for Judge RoseMarie Lipinski of the Illinois Court of Claims from 2004 to 2006.
Mr. Murphy has been a guest lecturer for the Loyola University Chicago School of Law and the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education. His most recent publication is entitled “A Litigator’s Guide to Mediation”, Illinois Bar Journal, January 2006, Vol. 94.
